Getting started

Getting started.

Create a workspace, place a test call, and invite your first agent. One browser tab, nothing to install.

What you need

  • A desktop or laptop. The agent workspace needs a window at least 1024 px wide; below that it shows a "Use a desktop browser" screen instead of the softphone. The admin console works on smaller screens.
  • A supported browser (see Browser and headset).
  • A headset. Any headset your computer already recognises as a microphone and speaker works.
  • Nothing else. The softphone runs in the browser over WebRTC: no desk phones, no plug-ins, no installs.

Create a workspace

  1. 01
    /04
    Pick a plan

Go to /signup, or press Start free trial on /pricing. Choose Starter, Growth or Enterprise, the number of agents, and monthly or annual billing. Annual costs ten times the monthly price: two months free.

  2. 02
    /04
    Tell us who you are

Company name, your name, your work email and a password. You become the owner of the new workspace.

  3. 03
    /04
    Accept the terms

Tick the box to accept the Terms of Service and the Acceptable Use Policy, and to confirm you understand the dialer can't be used for emergency calls. Outbound calling stays locked until an owner has accepted the terms, so this step unlocks it.

  4. 04
    /04
    Verify your email

We send a verification link to the owner's address. During a trial without a card, softphones switch on once the owner's email is verified. Agents you create later never need to verify anything themselves.

Trial rules

Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial.

  • Up to 5 agents without a card. A card-less trial is limited to 5 seats, 300 outbound minutes, 1 phone number, calls within your home country, and no predictive dialing.
  • More than 5 agents at signup, or a disposable email address, takes you to checkout to add a card. You still get the 14-day trial.
  • Prices, seats and minutes are covered in Billing & usage.

What a new workspace already has

You don't start from an empty screen. Every new workspace comes with:

  • The default dispositions (Sale, Interested, Callback requested, Not interested, Left voicemail, Wrong number, Do not call, Resolved, Escalated, Other, plus system codes).
  • Break reasons: Lunch, Break, Meeting, Training, Coaching and Technical issue.
  • A business-hours schedule, "Weekdays 9–5", in your timezone.
  • A queue named Sales that rings the longest-idle agent.
  • A draft business profile for caller-ID verification.

The Overview page of the admin console shows an onboarding checklist: get a phone number, create a queue, invite agents, place a test call, set calling hours, launch a campaign and, on live telephony, verify your business. Each item ticks itself off from your data.

Simulator mode

Some installations of the dialer run on a simulator instead of a carrier: for demos, evaluation and testing. The call logic is the same (queues, IVR, campaigns, dispositions, recordings, reports), but ringing, answering and audio are emulated, and no real phone ever rings. You can tell you're on the simulator because:

  • the wallboard has a Simulate inbound call button, and each number's page has Simulate inbound call to this number;
  • a new workspace gets one synthetic phone number straight away, routed to the Sales queue and set as the default caller ID, so you can place and receive calls in the first minute;
  • recordings play back as synthetic tones.

Simulator test numbers

On the simulator, the last four digits of the number you dial decide what happens. Use these to rehearse every outcome before you go live.

Fieldtypedescription
+1 201 555 0000BusyRings for 2 seconds, then busy.
+1 201 555 1111No answerRings until the ring timeout.
+1 201 555 2222Answering machineA machine answers at 4 seconds. Answering-machine detection reports a machine; when waiting for the beep, the message ends 6 seconds later.
+1 201 555 3333FailedFails immediately (number not found). No ringing.
+1 201 555 4444Short callA person answers at 3 seconds and hangs up after 8 seconds.
+1 201 555 5555Long callA person answers at 1.5 seconds and never hangs up. You end the call. Use it to try hold and transfer.
+1 201 555 6666FaxAnswering-machine detection reports a fax.
+1 201 555 7777Machine false positiveA person answers, but answering-machine detection classifies the call as a machine.
+1 201 555 8888Slow pickupA person answers after 12 seconds.
+1 201 555 9999DropsAnswers, then hangs up at 3 seconds while the agent is joining. In power and predictive campaigns this shows up as an abandoned call.
Any other numberHumanA person answers after 2 to 5 seconds and talks for 30 seconds to 3 minutes, unless the installation has switched on a realistic mix of outcomes.
Tip

Test numbers go through the same checks as real ones. Outside 08:00–21:00 in New Jersey time (the 201 area code), the softphone asks for an override reason before it dials (with the default calling-hours policy), because calling hours apply to every number. See Compliance.

Browser and headset

Fieldtypedescription
ChromeSupportedCurrent or previous major version.
EdgeSupportedCurrent or previous major version.
FirefoxSupportedCurrent version.
SafariSupportedVersion 17 or later.

When an agent opens the workspace, the Start your shift card checks the browser (and lists the supported ones if it isn't), checks microphone permission, and ends with Go available. That click unlocks audio and starts the phone.

  • Microphone. The browser asks for permission the first time. If it was blocked, allow the microphone for the dialer's site in the browser's site settings and reload.
  • Headset and audio devices. On live telephony, the audio menu lets agents pick the microphone, speaker and ringtone device (where the browser supports device selection), set the ringtone volume and play a test ringtone.
  • Network. On live telephony, Test connection measures round-trip time, jitter, packet loss and an estimated call-quality score, and marks each as pass or warn. The softphone needs HTTPS to the dialer and WebRTC media to the carrier; if a corporate firewall blocks WebRTC, the test warns.
  • Keep the tab open. The workspace tab is the phone. If it loses its connection for about 75 seconds while the agent isn't on a call, the agent is set to Offline so callers aren't offered to an empty desk.

Place your first test call

  1. 01
    /04
    Open the agent workspace

Sign in and open /agent. Owners and admins get a softphone only when Takes calls is switched on for their user in Team, which uses a seat. Or sign in as the agent you invite below.

  2. 02
    /04
    Go available

Press Go available on the Start your shift card.

  3. 03
    /04
    Dial

Type +1 201 555 4444 in the dialpad and press Call. On the simulator, a person answers after 3 seconds and hangs up 8 seconds later.

  4. 04
    /04
    Wrap up

The softphone moves to wrap-up. Pick a disposition (press 1 for Sale), add a note if you like, and press Done. You're available again, and the call is listed under Calls in the admin console.

To try inbound, press Simulate inbound call on the wallboard (simulator only). The call enters the Sales queue and rings the longest-idle available agent. Answer with Answer or Alt+A.

Invite your first agent

Open Team in the admin console and press Add agent.

  • Enter a name and either an email address or a username. Agents and supervisors without a work email can sign in with your workspace name and a username.
  • Pick the role and the queues.
  • Send an invite by email, or set a temporary password that the agent changes at first sign-in.

Each agent uses one seat. Logins, roles and seats are covered in Agents & the workspace.

Caution

The dialer does not provide emergency calling. Numbers such as 911, 112 and 999 are blocked in the softphone. Keep a mobile or landline phone available on your floor.
